LEINSTER LEADER – MARCH 4th
Notoriously difficult to please, The Sunday Times album reviewer gave U2′s latest release a meagre two star rating. Right alongside that review, another Irish band was before the critics with their debut album. They got FOUR stars. That band is the Naas based Carosel.
Riding on the crest of a wave following the launch of their debut album Kaleidoscope, Carosel are getting rave reviews just about everywhere you look and the strikingly pretty lead singer’s honeyed voice sings out from every radio and TV channel.
They are the band everyone is talking about and it is no wonder. Their music washes over you; refreshingly upbeat in the middle of all this doom and gloom. This is a real feel-good album, warm, upbeat and distinctive.
Lead singer and co-songwriter Michelle Phelan is from Lakelands in Naas. She is the type of person who sounds as though she is smiling all the time and her mellow, sunny vibe comes across in the songs she writes with Dubliner (and boyfriend) Pete Mc Grane.
Between them, they have produced an absolute treasure in Kaleidoscope. Pop it into your CD player and the mix of pop, jazz, soul, bossa nova and flamenco will lift your spirits. Carosel launched Kaleidoscope in Whelan’s, Dublin this week. Dont be surprised if you hear a lot more from these rising stars.
